The oldest profession. Prostitution has been around since Ancient times. Paying for sex is nothing new.

Who pays for sex? The Mirror reports that a new study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections reveals the percentage of men who pay for sex. According to the study, ten percent of British men have paid for sex. But even more men see sex workers in other countries.

England. Of the 6,000 men surveyed in England, 3.6% admitted to seeing a sex worker in the last five years. And the Johns aren’t what you’d think they’d be. According to Mirror, the survey found that “Single men aged 25 to 34, in managerial or professional occupations and those with high numbers of sexual partners were the most likely to say that they had paid for sex.”

England. Scientist Dr Cath Mercer, from University College London, told Mirror, "The picture that emerges does not necessarily fit the stereotype of the lonely older man….In fact, men who pay for sex are more likely to be young professionals with many unpaid sexual partners. Many report other hedonistic and risky behaviours including heavy drinking and drug taking."

STIs. The report also found men who saw prostitutes were twice as likely to get diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection. According to the Mirror, men who saw prostitutes had twice the sexual partners of the national average. And they made up 15.6% of all diagnosed STIs in the UK.

But not from sex workers… Dr. Mercer added that those STIs weren’t necessarily transmitted from prostitutes. She told Mirror, "Men who pay for sex are evidently at high risk of infection, but this does not necessarily mean that the STIs are spread through their paid sex. Instead, we found that these men report engaging in other risky sexual behaviors, such as having concurrent - or overlapping - partners, and so should be considered a core-group for sexual health interventions and services."

Cambodia. Cambodia and Thailand had the highest percentages of men going to brothels. According to Procon.org, 59-80 percent of Cambodian men have paid for sex. 75% of Thai men have as well.

First time? In some cultural circles, it is common for a young man to lose his virginity to a sex worker. In Italy, experts estimate 16.7-45 percent of men have paid for sex. Writes Bruno Wanrooji, PhD., “Until 1960, about a quarter of Italian young men had their first complete heterosexual experience with prostitutes. Visits to brothels were considered part of the process of coming of age for young, unmarried men, even though in reality middle-aged married men made up a large part of the clientele.”

Business expense? In some corporate circles, visiting a brothel during your lunch break is a form of entertainment. According to Procon.org, 37% of men in Japan have seen prostitutes. Robert T. Francoeur, PhD writes, “It is still quietly accepted and understood that a Japanese husband may join business associates or friends for a visit to a 'Soapland' red-light district...The old-style, leisurely coital sex play with geishas and Soap Ladies, however, is declining in favor of quick, cheaper (and hence, more frequently affordable) masturbation, oral sex, and voyeurism.”

What about America? American men are high on the list for seeing sex workers. Procon.org estimates 15 to 20 percent of men in America have paid for sex at some point in their lives, which is a lot less than earlier surveys. Kinsey reports in 1948 estimated 69% of men paid for sex, and Benjamin and Masters found 80% did in 1964.

Norway. The 12.9 percent of men in Norway who pay for sex do not fit the mold of the typical John. According to Procon.org, seeing a sex worker in Norway is associated with being single, on disability, and having multiple partners. But these men were more likely to have sexually transmitted infections.

France. Brothels are becoming increasingly trendy in France. According to Procon.org, 16% of French men have seen an escort at some point in time. Street prostitution is becoming less popular, as middle-class men are shifting toward more discreet forms of sex purchase.
