Dell's Inspiron 13 is their least expensive consumer 13.3-inch laptop model and it offers a very strong value for those looking at a basic, low cost and highly portable laptop. It offers a good battery life for a system of its size with decent overall performance. The downside is that the system is larger and heavier than the average 13.3-inch laptop and only has two USB ports while most in this size feature three.

Guide Review - Dell Inspiron 13 13.3-inch Ultraportable Laptop PC

Dell's Inspiron 13 is really designed as a low cost, affordable yet highly portable laptop for consumers. While most of their units sold will probably sell for under $750, it is possible to get one configured to offer higher performance yet still be priced under $1000.

In this configuration, Dell equipped the system with a relatively new Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor running at 2.0 GHz. This combined with the 4GB of DDR2 memory allows the system to perform quite well in a variety of applications without pushing the price up too much.

Even with the very reasonable price tag, the Inspiron 13 has some surprisingly good build quality. The keyboard exhibits very little flex with a good overall feel. It also runs fairly cool compared to many other 13.3-inch laptops that have limited space for cooling and components.

Individuals who need to carry or connect a wide range of peripherals may be disappointed with the Inspiron 13. While it doesn't drop the FireWire port from the system, Dell only includes two USB 2.0 ports. With this being the most common interface and most laptops featuring at least three, this can cause issues for some consumers.

Probably the biggest drawback to the Inspiron 13 is its size and weight. For a 13.3-inch laptop, it is fairly large with a maximum thickness of 1.5-inches and weighing nearly five pounds. This pushes it closer towards the size and weight of 14.1-inch thin and light system than it does ultraportables.

Much of the weight is probably taken up from the six cell battery pack that comes with the system. The larger battery pack while weighing down the system does give it a better than average running time with real world running time of between three and a half to four hours.
