We’ve all seen a couple in which one partner was caught cheating, then had the other woman dumped like a pile of bricks. The cheater almost always comes crawling back to their original partner, and that original partner rarely is sexier than the other woman. Have you ever wondered why cheaters always come back to their partners, why they regularly beg to be forgiven, or why they always seem to try to work things out? The most common reason why they want to come back is because they didn’t actually want to change their life. And let’s just face it, a breakup is a major life changer. In the case of a marriage, it could lead to a divorce that means a lower quality of life for them, a change in housing, and even a change in income.
The fact is that their main chick offers them security that the side chick typically doesn’t. Guys date the main girl because they want to have a home with her. The reason they stray is because, more often than not, they want to have their cake and eat it, too. Obviously, this isn’t fair to you.
And, studies have shown that men are wired to love security as much as they do sex. The end result is that they end up hedging their bets because they want both. The problem is that in many cases, they don’t want YOU back as much as they just want THE SECURITY YOU OFFER BACK.
In many cases, they may have just realized what they just traded and are panicking as a result. Once they realize that they may have traded security for something that can’t actually give them much hope in the future, cheaters panic. Most cheaters view side pieces as a fantasy, or like a “luxury addition.” You can’t play without having a good life to come home to - at least, not feasibly.
Losing you may also mean that they lose respect of family members. Cheating is deplorable behavior, and people who do it are often vilified by society. This can personally affect a cheater’s life - especially if his own kids and family members are the ones who don’t like him anymore. This makes them lose that warm, loving family they cared about so much.
Moreover, there’s also the sunk cost of time. Cheaters spend a lot more time with their main chicks than their side pieces. As a result, if the main girl leaves, that often signals to them that they just lost all the time and effort they poured into her. They don’t want to lose what they feel they “worked hard to get.”
In many cases, they may come back because they’re scared of financial loss. Here’s the truth: breakups can be very expensive. If a cheater cheats and gets caught, he could end up having a girl wreck his car, force him to pay alimony, or even force him to pay half of his salary. For some men, this could end with them living in a van down by the river.
Then, there’s the fact that most men actually don’t really care about the other woman at all - they just care that she validates his desirability. And that’s actually the real reason most men have affairs. They wonder if women find him desirable - women aside from you. He counted on you being a safe haven, and the woman validating him. The other woman wasn’t what he wanted at all.
The fact is that many men who are serial cheaters want to cheat because they love the idea of having a security blanket they can trust, while also getting play on the side. Simply put, women who are good to them make them like the feeling of cheating. They may even get their jollies off of seeing women fight over them. It’s sick, but it’s true. They get addicted.
Of course, there are many men who only realize what they had when it left. Most guys who cheat don’t think of the future. They don’t think about the fallout because it is, in fact, a primal thing most of the time. When they realize everything that they lost by cheating, they do want it back. Unfortunately for these idiots, it’s too late.
At times, it’s just the fear of change that makes them feel like they need to crawl back. Let’s say that the other woman is prettier, more successful, and just better than you. When he crawls back to you, it could be because he loves you - or that he loves the status quo you guys have. Change is scary for some, and that fear of change could make them think it’s better to stay with you than to go with a better partner.
Other times, cheaters may actually see getting caught as a wakeup call that proves to them that they really love their partners. There’s something about looking at your partner’s face as they’re crying because of how badly you hurt them that can make them realize what they had done. For some cheaters, this is what it all boils down to - they realized too late that they hurt them.
What’s really sad is that, at times, they may only do it because of the public image they have. We often see this happen when politicians get caught. They practically beg their wives to forgive them because their entire futures and careers hinge on them having a certain “happy family” image.
The bottom line is that, while some guys actually will end up going back because they do love the person they were with…Most actually are more in love with the security, the respect, and the positive image they used to have. They just want their cake and to eat it too. And, that’s really not fair to those who cheated.
