Why do Li Ion batteries like IBM X60 laptop battery have five contacts than three?

Lots of rechargeable batteries have 3 or even 4 contacts. For the most part they are used to sense the battery temperature. If the battery gets hot the charger either shuts down for some time or switches to a slower charge rate.

I am looking to buy both these things & i am having issues finding lovely prices for them.

GOOD or BAD ???? I am thinking about the IBM Thinkpad X60 battery.

It contains the IBM Thinkpad X60 replacement battery battery pack.

I am glad it comes with a battery pack that lasts longer than a standard.

but:

1. What is the lifetime of such a battery pack? How lots of reuses can i get out of it?

2. Are such Li-ion batteries or specially this Sony pack respectable?

3.Ought to i purchase a second battery pack & leave it on the shelf for a year when the 1st pack dies?

I would not bother purchasing a second battery at this stage, I am not definite of how lots of times a battery can be charged, but it would be a large number of times.

If I were you, I would use the one battery & takes steps to preserve it is life by turning off the LCD screen in- between shots, limit how long you review your images, & also limit your use of the flash. You can also turn off the LCD & use the viewfinder in lieu to compose your shots. Doing this, will give you plenty more battery life. & make definite you give the battery a top up charge as often as feasible. You don't must wait for the battery to fully drain before you re-charge it.
