Sony's VAIO EE23FX/BI laptop may be affordable but it doesn't really set itself apart from the competition in terms of features, performance or price. Instead, the system really comes down to design and function. The keyboard is very well made and a joy to type on and the system runs very quiet with little in terms of heat. The downside is that the exterior case shows many fingerprints and the glittered palmrest looks like a child dropped some craft materials on it.

Sony has decided to mix things up with the VAIO EE series laptops by switching away from the Intel processors to use the more affordable AMD chips. In the case of the EE23FX, it uses the AMD Athlon II P320 dual core processor. For may people, this processor will provide enough performance but it does fall short of the Intel Core i3 in most tasks. The 4GB of DDR3 memory help it avoid too many slowdowns from multitasking or memory intensive programs.

Storage features on the VAIO EE are pretty much in line with just about every other budget laptop on the market. It comes with a 320GB hard drive that provides a decent amount of storage space for applications, data and media files. It spins at the traditional 5400rpm rate which gives it modest performance. A standard dual layer DVD burner handles all playback and recording of CDs or DVDs. The front of the laptop features slots for the very common SD media card type and the lesser Sony Memory Stick.

The display on the Sony VAIO EE uses a 15.5-inch panel that features a standard 1366x768 native resolution. It also comes with a glossy coating that is common to the consumer laptop market which produces a fair amount of glare and reflections under certain lighting conditions. Powering the graphics is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 integrated graphics solution. This is a step up from the Intel integrated graphics solutions particularly for 3D graphics performance. It is still very limited compared to a dedicated solution and can only really be used for casual 3D gaming at very low resolution and detail levels.

Like many other budget laptops, the VAIO EE series uses a six cell battery pack that the company calls the standard capacity battery such as Sony PCGA-BP71 battery, Sony VGP-BPS2 battery, Sony VGP-BPS3 battery, Sony VGP-BPS5 battery, Sony VGP-BPS8 battery, Sony VGP-BPS9 battery, Sony VGP-BPL2 battery, Sony PCG-R505 battery, Sony PCG-V505 battery, Sony PCG-Z505 battery. In DVD playback testing, the laptop is able to run for roughly two and half hours before going into standby mode. More traditional usage should yield about another hour for three and a half hours of use. This falls in line with many other laptops in the $650 price range.

The design of the Sony VAIO EE is going to be love or hate for most people. The black casing is very glossy. While many companies have gone to textured design to hide prints, the Sony design lacks this so it turns into a fingerprint magnet that requires a large amount of cleaning. The interior palmrest area does differ by adding in some glitter particles. This unfortunately actually makes the laptop look less sophisticated.

One nice aspect of the Sony VAIO EE is the keyboard design. It uses the isolated key layout common to many other models that provides it with a very comfortable and accurate design that is a pleasure to type on. The laptop also features a full sized numeric keypad which is very useful for those that need to do a lot of number input.
