(Not that you really need headphones because the built-in speakers sound pretty darn good without them.)


The 14.1-inch, 1280-by-800-pixel screen could be a tad brighter, but it's easy enough to read, and it has enough room to comfortably view several open windows at once. The dv2660se does lack some increasingly mainstream features, such as 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, gigabit ethernet, and a fingerprint reader. However, it has 802.11g Wi-Fi, which should provide fast-enough wireless connectivity for most. It also has a DVD writer and an ExpressCard slot. And the dv2600se is one of the few laptops in this price range to bundle a full-fledged set of productivity applications in the form of Microsoft Works 8.5.


Finally, the dv2660se has the most upgrade potential thanks to a side connection that all Pavilion laptops have for HP's Swiss knife-like xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base. Though you're looking at an investment of several hundred dollars more, this stand/storage docking station lets you add better speakers and another hard drive, a nice option for those who might have the itch to improve the system later on.

Dell also shared another feature that we can expect a few months down the line. Termed Dell Latitude ON, Lionel Menchaca at Dell blogs about this feature: "It is an application that gives you access to your e-mail, contacts, calendar, attachments and the Internet without the need to boot into the system's main OS. The Dell Latitude ON mode will enable multi-day battery life since it utilizes a dedicated low-voltage sub-processor and operating system." The feature is expected to appear on the Latitude E4200 and E4300 "in the coming months".


*An aside: It's funny how 19 hours of battery life seems a lot to us. Not long ago, PDAs would run multiple days on a couple of AAs. Today, anything mobile that runs longer than 5 hours on a single charge is heralded as a saviour. Our devices can do so much more that the PDA of old, but battery technology has severely lagged behind. Hopefully, 19 hours on a single charge will become the norm soon.

The first time I saw the iPad, I wondered how we could type on it. My jaw dropped when I first saw this concept. It's the kind of thing that would make you say, "Now why didn't anybody else think of that before!". It runs Windows 7 Home Premium that is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor and 2GB RAM. There is Dell's Stage UI overlay to make Windows more finger-friendly in tablet mode. There's also a typical spinning 320GB hard drive, that's around 20 times more storage than what you typically get on a Tablet like an iPad or the Galaxy Tab. Also, replace the spinning hard drive with flash storage would help conserve battery. Lastly, a slimmer chassis would be the cherry on the icing.

A short while ago, Asus announced another addition to its popular Eee PC line of netbooks and this newest version was supposed to bring a series of improvements over its predecessors. At first glance, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE sounds a lot like the other 10-inch Eee PCs that preceded it, but in many ways, it could be the best netbook from Asus to date.


For obvious reasons, I don’t really include something like the T91 Tablet and S101 Premium Netbook as part of this discussion, because they fall into a different kind of niche. By contrast, the Eee PC 1000HE falls into the same segment as something like the MSI Wind U100 and the Acer Aspire One.


If you happen to be in the market for a decent netbook, I’m thinking that the 1000HE could be one of your best options. No, this is not a paid endorsement and I haven’t had an opportunity to go hands-on, but this Eee has a lot going in its favor.


Features at a Glance


As I said, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE isn’t particularly revolutionary in its approach and what it brings to the netbook market, but it does seem to offer one of the best packages on the market today. Let’s take a quick look at the spec sheet.


Much like the other netbooks in the Eee PC 1000 series, this netbook comes with a 10.1-inch widescreen display. I find that this is the optimal size for a netbook. Anything bigger and you’re getting into “real” notebook territory and anything smaller and you may find yourself squinting more often than you’d like.


The spec sheet sounds pretty standard for this segment, including a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Windows XP, a 92%-sized keyboard, a multi-touch trackpad, and a built-in webcam. Interestingly, the Wi-Fi includes 802.11n, a feature that isn’t found in many of its direct competitors. Further still, while the Eee PC 1000HE gets powered by Atom, it’s the new Atom N280 (rather than the existing N270). More on the processor in a moment.


That’s Some Mad Battery Life


Perhaps the biggest appeal to this particular netbook is its battery life. While it makes use of a six-cell battery such as Asus A42-A3 Battery, Asus A8F Battery, Asus F3T Battery, Asus F3Sc Battery, Asus F3Sv Battery, Asus 90-NI11B1000 Battery, Asus 90-NIA1B1000 Battery, Asus 90-NF51B1000 Battery, Asus 70-NF51B1000 Battery, Asus A32-A8 Battery, Asus Z99J Battery, Asus Z99H Battery, it is able to pump out an impressive 9.5 hours of computing. Granted, there are a lot of netbooks using three-cell and four-cell batteries, but 9.5 hours is still a very long time.


The extended battery life comes courtesy of Asus’ exclusive Super Hybrid Engine, a technology that the company has already implemented in some of its notebooks. The Super Hybrid Engine (that’s where the HE comes from) reduces performance to extend battery life as needed, ramping up performance as it is required. In order to attain 9.5 hours, however, you’ll need to dial down the brightness on the LED-backlit display and shut off the wireless radios.


Things the Eee PC 1000HE Does Right


When I had the chance to use the Asus Eee PC 1000HA, I was very impressed with the overall build quality. It was very solid and had a natural design element to it that allowed for ample airflow beneath the netbook. This helped with both performance and cooling. My only major complaint was the placement of the right shift key, which was placed way to the right. My pinky finger could barely reach it, getting me to hit the “up” arrow more often than not.


Asus fixed this quibble with the Eee PC 1000HE, relocating the right shift key to the left of the up arrow. This is a more common placement and it will significantly reduce typing errors. That’s huge for me, since I write for a living.


The other thing that sets the Eee PC 1000HE apart, for now at least, is the Atom N280 processor. This isn’t quite the dual-core Atom that we’ve been wanting for a while now, but it does improve on the N270 that you see everywhere else. Yes, they are both 1.6GHz processors, but the N280 has a 667 FSB, compared to the 533 FSB on the N270. That should help with both performance and efficiency.

Despite some of the notable upgrades — N280, Wireless-N, extended battery, chicklet keyboard, proper placement of right shift key, etc. — the Asus Eee PC 1000HE isn’t that much more expensive than some of its counterparts.


The pre-order page on Amazon.com has it listed at US$374.00. Over at NCIX.com, they have it at $449.99 CDN. Going through the current exchange rate of about 22%, both stores are effectively selling it for the same price.


No, it’s not quite as cheap as a $200 Dell Mini 9, but you get a lot more here too. If anyone at Asus is paying attention, I’d love to give the 1000HE a test drive to see if it really does live up to expectations.



Leyden Energy Launches Three-year Lithium Ion Batteries

How many of you have run into the overheating, premature death of a laptop battery? I know we have. Then you may like the news of a three year battery – guaranteed. Last week Leyden Energy launched its next-generation replacement lithium-ion batteries for laptops. The batteries such as Asus A42-A3 Battery, Asus A8F Battery, Asus F3T Battery, Asus F3Sc Battery, Asus F3Sv Battery, Asus 90-NI11B1000 Battery, Asus 90-NIA1B1000 Battery, Asus 90-NF51B1000 Battery, Asus 70-NF51B1000 Battery, Asus A32-A8 Battery, Asus Z99J Battery, Asus Z99H Battery won’t lose their full charge for at least three years, and will come with a three-year warranty to boot. Leyden has a deal to sell their batteries online with Dr. Battery, a Canadian-based supplier of replacement batteries for tablets, laptops and other electronic devices. The batteries should be available for purchase in a couple of weeks.


It’s pretty frustrating when a laptop loses the ability to fully charge and barely provides you with a couple hours of battery life. For most laptops, the battery will start losing its ability to fully charge after about a year and a half. Dell estimates noticeable reduction in run time in their laptops will be observed after 18 to 24 months. According to Leyden Energy, their batteries have one of the highest energy densities and run times for lithium-ion laptop batteries on the market, with 440 watt hours per liter and over 1,000 cycles.


Standard lithium-ion batteries use a salt-based solvent within the electrolyte that starts degrading at a temperature of between 70 to 80 C, while Leyden’s salt-based solvent doesn’t degrade until about 300 C. Thus, since the batteries can operate at higher temperatures than traditional batteries, they are able to provide a full charge for a longer amount of time.


Boston Power released a three-year lasting lithium-ion battery in 2008. The company has a partnership with ASUS, and the ASUS B Series notebooks are powered by Boston Power’s batteries. Currently Leyden is only able to offer laptop replacement batteries, so until they strike a deal with a major laptop manufacturer and get the battery right in the laptop, they might have a hard time competing with Boston Power. Right now Leyden Energy is working with Brammo to supply the battery for its electric motorcycle the Empulse. The company has also received $2.96 million in grants from the California Energy Commission to produce ten electric vehicle (EV) batteries per month. Leyden Energy hasn’t yet determined the exact price of the battery, but the three-year battery will be less than double the cost of a one-year battery.

Taiwanese firm Acer is focusing on introducing breakthrough technologies even in tough market conditions in a bid to become the world's top notebook vendor by 2011, a top company official said.


"When [the] rest of the computer manufacturers are cutting costs due to recession, Acer is the only company introducing new technologies at the right time, and investing heavily in product development to make use of the recession and grab maximum market share," Krishna Murthy, managing director, Middle East and Africa (MEA), said after launching the new Aspire Timeline notebook.


He said the industry outlook is flat, but the notebook market will experience double-digit growth fuelled by strong demand for netbooks, while the desktop market will suffer 15-20 per cent negative growth.


Placed in second position after HP in the first quarter of 2009, the company expects 10 per cent growth in unit terms and to grab 16-17 per cent of the MEA market with its multi-branding strategy.


"The launch of the new Acer Aspire Timeline series marks the beginning of a new era in mobile computing. In fact, Acer based the new notebooks on a simple yet revolutionary idea: instead of making laptops with bulkier and heavier batteries such as Acer Aspire 1300 Battery, Acer BTP-APJ1 Battery, Acer BTP-AQJ1 Battery, Acer BTP-ARJ1 Battery, Acer BATCL32 battery, Acer BATCL32L battery, Acer Aspire 2000 battery, Acer Aspire 2016 battery, Acer Aspire 2200 battery, Acer BATBL50L6 battery ..., we made a series of notebooks which are more efficient, and capable [of] reducing energy consumption and boosting battery life by up to 40 per cent," Murthy said.

Acer, which entered the mobile communications market with the acquisition of E-Ten last year, expects to launch smart phones in 2009.


"The smart phone market is growing rapidly despite being highly competitive. Acer's strategy is to identify the growing market and segment, and be there at the right time," Krishna Murthy, managing director of Acer Middle East and Africa, said. It will launch a collection of touch-screen smart phones. Some models are already launched in Europe and Asian markets.


"We are getting sample pieces now and meeting channel partners ," Murthy said.

Acer ships updated Aspire One

About a week ahead of schedule, Acer has started US shipments of its second generation Aspire One netbook, a Windows XP-only device with a larger 10.1-inch screen.


Despite the bigger screen size of the new Aspire One AOD150, Acer's latest netbook doesn't offer an appreciably roomier keyboard, according to some who have tried out the new PC, which first shipped in the UK on January 23.


On the other hand, some units will reportedly be outfitted with a new, much more capable battery 5800mAH battery from Acer -- instead of the standard 4400mAH battery such as Acer BTP-73E1 Battery, Acer BATCL50L Battery, Acer TravelMate 290 Battery, Acer TravelMate 4000 Battery, Acer TravelMate 2300 Battery, Acer Aspire 1680 Battery, Acer Aspire 1410 Battery, Acer TravelMate 4500 Battery, Acer LCBTP03003 Battery, Acer Aspire 1300 Battery-- simply because Acer was in a hurry to get the new netbooks out the door.


Other specs of the Aspire One AOD150 include a 160 GB hard drive, single SDHC Card slot, 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, and 1 GB of RAM.


But unlike the original 8.9-inch Aspire, which came preloaded with a choice of Windows XP Home or Linpus Linux Lite, the AOD150 is available with Windows XP only.


Similarly, Asustek, another up-and-comer with its netbooks, decided some time ago to emphasize Windows over Linux -- in the US market, anyway.


"Linux is going well for us, especially in Europe," said Josh Norem, senior technical marketing specialist at Asustek, in an interview with Betanews late last fall. "But now we're focusing on Windows XP, because a lot of people find it easier to use."


Acer and Asustek both seem to be doing a lot of things right in the US space, if data released today by IDC is a good indication. Under very tough economic conditions, both companies grew their shares in the US notebook/netbook market during the fourth quarter of 2008. Acer's portable PC shipments in the US amounted to more than four million, showing a 57% increase over the same quarter the year before.


For its part, relative newcomer Asustek shipped about 300,000 portables in the US during the quarter, landing in eighth place with a 3% market share. At the same time, US industry leader Dell slipped 8% to 8.88 million units, followed very closely in the rankings by Hewlett-Packard, with 8.77 million units.


But is there hope for Linux on netbooks yet? HP last week rolled an Ubuntu Linux-based custom GUI for its own Mini 1000 Mi Edition netbook, with a new UI that is reportedly better geared to ease of use than most Linux offerings for netbooks.

The business-oriented analog of Acer's Ferrari 1100, the TravelMate 6292 shares many of the same features as its flashier sibling but wraps them in a slightly thicker, boxier case that's better suited for boardrooms.


One key difference: The TravelMate 6292 incorporates Intel's latest Core 2 Duo platform, which resulted in a performance boost on our multimedia multitasking benchmarks. The TravelMate 6292 also offers great battery life, which should be a boon for business travelers who regularly work long stretches away from a power outlet.


In fact, the acer's battery such as Acer BTP-43D1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 220 Battery, Acer BTP-58A1 Battery, acer BTP-60A1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 240 Battery, Acer BTP-52EW Battery, Acer BTP-63D1 Battery, Acer BTP-42C1 Battery, acer BTP-44A3 Battery, Acer BTP-550P Battery, along with price, are its primary advantages over our other favorite full-featured ultraportable, the Lenovo 3000 V200.


The TravelMate 6292's thick case, which weighs nearly 5 pounds, is best described as a "bulky ultraportable." Its size is nearly identical to that of the Lenovo 3000 V200, though the TravelMate weighs nearly half a pound more than the Lenovo. By comparison, traditional ultraportables, such as the Sony VAIO TZ150 or the Lenovo ThinkPad X61s, weigh 3 pounds or less.


Still, the TravelMate 6292 is light enough to carry often, and its solid construction feels capable of standing up to the bumps and knocks of frequent travel.


The 12.1-inch wide-screen display on the TravelMate 6292 features a native resolution of 1,280x800, which offers a decent balance of screen real estate and readability for this size display.


Unlike the more consumer-oriented Ferrari 1100, the TravelMate 6292's screen features a matte coating that's preferable for productivity tasks (less glare in brightly-lit office environments)--though it also proved adequate for watching movies. Above the display sits a 1.3-megapixel Webcam with a single microphone for Web videoconferencing.


Like most ultraportables, the TravelMate 6292's tiny case requires a compact keyboard with a shortened space bar and arrow keys. We found it suitable for extended periods of typing, though we prefer the slightly separated keys on the Ferrari 1000. The touch pad is likewise compact, but its broad width makes it usable without feeling cramped.


The TravelMate 6292's mouse buttons are a bit small, owing to the fingerprint reader wedged between them. A vertical row of buttons on the right side of the keyboard deck include three application quick-launch keys plus on/off controls for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios; an "e" button above the keyboard brings up Acer's proprietary widget toolbar, with tools for managing Internet connections, monitoring power options, and changing security settings.


The launch keys are helpful, but we can't help wondering if they could have been placed at the top of the deck to create room for a larger keyboard.


The advantage of a bulky case: plenty of room for ports and connections. The TravelMate 6292 offers both S/PDIF and audio line-out jack. Given the predictably muddled sound emitted by the stereo speakers, you'll want to plug in some external speakers or headphones.


The larger case also means there's room for a DVD burner, though the TravelMate 6292 incorporates a tray-loading drive instead of the slot-loading model found on the Ferrari 1100. It's a small nitpick but we do appreciate a slot-loading drive for working in cramped spaces such as an airplane tray table.


Acer offers several versions of the TravelMate 6292, all stocked with Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the Mobile 965 Express chipset with integrated graphics. The configuration we tested included a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T7300 CPU (built on the company's Merom architecture), 1GB of 667MHz RAM, and a 5,400rpm hard drive.


On CNET Labs' benchmarks, the TravelMate 6292 finished mostly at the head of a pack of similarly configured systems. The one notable exception was the Photoshop test, where a Lenovo 3000 V200 configured with twice as much RAM finished well ahead of the Acer.


While it's always nice to have a little extra memory, it's not a strict necessity, particularly for the typical productivity applications, such as Microsoft Office, that most users will be running on the TravelMate.


On the whole, we feel that the TravelMate 6292 represents a good value, providing the majority of business users the power they need at a price that fits within most budgets.


The TravelMate 6292's six-cell battery extends 0.9 inch off the back of the laptop, adding to the amount of space it takes up in your bag. The sacrifice is well worth it, though: The system lasted a lengthy 4 hours, 32 minutes on our DVD battery drain test. That's 43 minutes longer than the life of the Dell XPS M1210 and well beyond the lives of the Lenovo 3000 V200 and Acer's own Ferrari 1100. Our DVD battery drain test is particularly taxing, so you can expect a slightly longer battery life during typical use.


Acer backs the system with a one-year parts and labor warranty that's standard for low-cost business systems. (Some higher-end business systems, such as ThinkPads, still ship with three-year warranties, but those models are also more expensive.) Adding two years of additional coverage runs $99.


Acer's technical-support phone lines are open only Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT. The company's online support could stand some sprucing up. Though it does offer easy driver and manual downloads, it lacks such helpful features as forums and real-time chat with a technical-support representative.

Acer TravelMate a compelling alternative laptop

We recently declared that the HP Compaq 6910p might woo corporate users away from Dell and Lenovo; after spending some time with the $1,049 Acer TravelMate 4720, we think it's a prime candidate to woo users away from HP.


The well-designed Acer exhibited admirable performance (which admittedly could be improved by adding RAM) and chart-topping battery life on our benchmarks, and its feature set includes nearly everything a business user will need.


What it lacks: enterprise-level features such as a Trusted Platform Module or built-in WWAN, both of which are available on the HP Compaq 6910p and the Dell Latitude D630. Also, the TravelMate 4720's one-year warranty and limited phone support hours will fall short of many corporate users' expectations. However, those shortcomings may be forgiven by small-business buyers and others who want a serious laptop at a low price.


With its latest TravelMate laptops, Acer has traded a silver lid for a dark gray that resembles the color of HP's business systems, including the Compaq 6910p.


Unlike the HP, though, the TravelMate incorporates rounded edges to keep it from looking too square. Its large nine-cell battery such as Acer BTP-43D1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 220 Battery, Acer BTP-58A1 Battery, acer BTP-60A1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 240 Battery, Acer BTP-52EW Battery, Acer BTP-63D1 Battery, Acer BTP-42C1 Battery, acer BTP-44A3 Battery, Acer BTP-550P Battery gives the laptop added gravitas, but at 5.8 pounds it's still reasonable to shuttle it from home to office on a regular basis--and it definitely feels sturdy enough to travel beyond the relative safety of your cubicle.


The 14.1-inch display on the TravelMate 4720 features a matte screen finish that's easy on the eyes when working on documents and spreadsheets. Its sharp 1,280x800 native resolution makes for attractive images and video without rendering text and icons impossibly small.


It doesn't get quite as bright as other displays we've seen (its maximum brightness in our Labs measured 171 cd/m2), which can cause it to look dim in bright environments; for us this was only problematic when we tried to work next to a sun-filled window. Also worth noting: The wide display bezel lacks the built-in Webcam that's often found on business thin-and-lights.


We mostly like the design of the TravelMate 4720. We found the wide keyboard and quiet keys comfortable enough for a lengthy stretch of typing. In particular, we appreciated the keyboard's slight ergonomic curve. (Acer is the only manufacturer we've seen that incorporates ergonomics into its laptop keyboards.)


At times the 1.5-inch-tall touch pad feels cramped, and the mouse buttons are too small, crowded in around a fingerprint reader; the placement would be acceptable if the fingerprint reader doubled as a scroll key, but it does not. Above the keyboard, a narrow metallic trim frames three tiny quick-launch buttons that can be configured to start specific programs.


Above these sit four more buttons, this time in black, to launch backup and chat programs, a system password utility, and the Acer eManager utility for manipulating system settings and power management. On the laptop's front edge sit two handy slider switches to control the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios.


The TravelMate 4720's case includes all the ports and connections you'd expect on a thin-and-light, with the exception of an ExpressCard slot; it features only a slot for older (but still ubiquitous) PC Cards.


The laptop's four USB ports are scattered around three sides of the base, which makes it easier to plug in lots of peripherals without getting cords tangled. You won't be able to rock out with the built-in speakers, which produce somewhat tinny sound; fortunately there's a dedicated line-out jack that lets you connect the TravelMate 4720 to external speakers.


At $1,049, the Acer TravelMate 4720 costs nearly $900 less than the similarly configured Dell Latitude D630 and $800 less than a similar HP Compaq 6910p. Like the Latitude D630, the TravelMate 4720 runs Windows XP. For the most part, the Acer kept pace with the Dell and the HP on CNET Labs' application benchmarks, even finishing slightly ahead of both other systems on our multitasking test.


The key difference came out during our Photoshop benchmark; the Acer dropped behind the more expensive laptops, which include twice as much RAM.


The TravelMate 4720 can accommodate up to 4GB of RAM, so you might want to upgrade to at least 2GB if you frequently use Photoshop or other resource-intensive programs; even with a RAM upgrade the TravelMate 4720 is still likely to cost less than its competitors. With just the baseline quantity of RAM, however, we were able to simultaneously surf the Web, work on documents, and stream music without any stuttering--as we'd expect from any laptop based on the latest components.


The TravelMate 4720's battery lasted 4 hours, 41 minutes on our taxing DVD drain test, effectively matching the record-setting life of the Dell Latitude D630. Part of this is because of the TravelMate 4720's nine-cell battery (the only size available for this model), which is larger than you'd typically find on a laptop of this size. Though the bulkier battery adds to the laptop's weight and depth, we think it's a worthwhile tradeoff, especially if your work involves a lot of time on planes and other locations away from a power outlet.


Acer backs the TravelMate 4720 with a one-year parts and labor warranty. Telephone support is toll-free, and runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST. On Acer's support Web site, users will find an e-mail form, some basic FAQs, and driver downloads.

How To Charge Your Laptop

Whether they're in our computers, cell phones, or cars, the only time we think about batteries is when they're almost dead and we need to find some place to charge them—and then we're not thinking nice things. Batteries are an old-school technology. We stuff them into gadgets that are always getting smaller, faster, and cheaper, but battery technology doesn't yield to Moore's Law. What we know about batteries today is pretty much what we knew about batteries back when ENIAC was invented. Our daily struggle with batteries has spawned a cottage industry of advice about their proper care and feeding. Some argue that the way to get the most juice out of your gadget is to charge it as often as you can. Others caution about the sin of overcharging; this school holds that batteries are happiest when they're run down to zero every once in a while. Dig deeper into this line of thinking and you find its proponents are most concerned about a battery-destroying phenomenon known as the "memory effect"—a worry that if you keep re-charging your battery before the juice goes down to zero, it will gradually lose capacity. A related annoyance is your gadget's battery meter; the more often you charge and recharge your iPod or your cell phone, the more inaccurate its fuel gauge seems to become.


To clear up these annoyances and conflicting theories, I called up Isidor Buchmann, the CEO of Cadex Electronics, a Canadian company that makes battery-testing equipment. Buchman also runs Battery University, a very helpful Web site for battery enthusiasts and engineers. I asked Buchmann how we can make sure that our batteries last a long time. "There is not too much to discuss," he began, and then launched into a conversation exploring the numerous frailties of batteries. The upshot is this happy factoid: No matter what you do, your battery will become a useless piece of junk—one day it will reach a point where it can no longer be charged, and then you'll have to recycle it. It will die if you use it often. It will die if you hardly ever use it. It will die if you charge it too much. It will die if you charge it too little. You can pull the battery out of your camera, stuff it under your mattress, and come back for it in five years. Guess what? Your battery will be dead. And when I say dead, I mean dead—not that it's run out of juice, but that it can no longer hold a charge.


That said, there are ways to prolong your batteries' lives. Here are some of Buchmann's tips:


Laptops: The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion laptop battery is about 18 months to 2 years, Buchmann says, but yours will last much longer if you don't punish it too much. The main stresses include undercharging, overcharging, and one that few of us consider: heat. Temperatures inside a laptop can reach more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hell for a battery.


Ideally, Buchmann says, you should try to keep your battery charged from 20 percent to 80 percent. Keep in mind that these are guidelines for ideal use—it's generally inconvenient to unplug your machine before it goes all the way to 100. But even if you're not on constant guard, be mindful of charging your machine constantly, well past when you know it's full. You also should be conscious of letting your battery run all the way to zero.


Try to keep your laptop as cool as possible. The best technique here is to charge up your battery when the computer is turned off. When your laptop is turned on and plugged in, you should pull the battery out of your computer. Yes, pull it out. "I know that's inconvenient," Buchmann says, "but keeping your laptop plugged in when the battery's fully charged—that combination is bad for your battery."


What if your battery can't be removed, as in Apple's latest laptops? Buchmann says that new laptop designs often place batteries in cooler parts of the machine, and they may also include some intelligence to limit the stress of a fully-charged battery—that is, the machines stop applying a charge when the batteries are just under full capacity. This prolongs the battery's lifespan. The trouble is, most laptop manufacturers keep their charging algorithms secret, so it's not possible to know which laptops use this battery-prolonging technique. (Bachmann assumes that Apple does so based on its battery-promoting advertisements.) But even if your computer is clever enough to stop charging the battery when it's full, you're still better off removing the battery if it is removable. This will help your battery beat the heat.


Phones, cameras, and other gadgets: In general, the rules are the same as for laptops: Keep the battery in the 20 percent to 80 percent range, and keep it cool. If you leave your phone on a hot car seat all afternoon, or if you run down your camera at an all-day trip to the zoo and then forget it in a sock drawer for six months—well, somewhere a little battery angel loses its wings.


The best way to store batteries that you won't be using for a long time—as in a camera, though this also applies to laptop batteries—is to charge them to the 40 percent level first, Bachmann says. Batteries "self deplete"—meaning they lose power even if they're not in use. Charging the battery a little bit before you put it away ensures that it doesn't get down to dangerously low levels while in storage.

Where'd Apple Get Its Juice

Apple announced on Monday that its much-anticipated iPhone will offer eight hours of talk time rather than the previously announced five. On Wednesday, Jack Shafer mocked journalists for lavishing attention on this tiny morsel of news. Even so, that clever bit of Apple PR got Explainer wondering: How do you make a battery last longer?


Tweak the hardware. Laptop batteries such as apple PowerBook G3 Battery, Apple PowerBook G4 Battery, Apple PowerBook G4 15 inch Battery, Apple A1012 Battery, Apple M8511 Battery, Apple M8244 Battery, Apple A1079 Battery, Apple A1078 Battery, Apple A1148 Battery, Apple M6091 Battery are often as large as the gadget's casing can accommodate, and there are no surprise technologies that can make a standard battery retain its juice longer. Instead, manufacturers concentrate on power management.


One way to improve power efficiency is to upgrade the hardware. A smart phone's circuit board incorporates dozens of chips that control the display, operating system, and the phone's wireless connection, among other things. Along with the screen, chips are the biggest power-consumers in a cellular device. By working with numerous chip manufacturers, Apple and other electronics companies can pick and choose individual chips that are particularly energy efficient. The iPhone's glass screen, announced this week, will also help save energy. Glass transmits light more efficiently than plastic, which will allow the iPhone's screen to maintain the same brightness while using a little less power.


Another way to extend battery life is to shut down parts that aren't in use. The more tasks a phone is running (phone calls, Web browsing sessions) the more quickly the battery gets depleted. Advanced operating systems—iPhone uses a version of Apple's OS X—can regulate the device's power usage, powering down the processor or the screen when they're not active. (Tech companies occasionally calculate a device's battery life with most of its hardware components shut off, an unrealistic situation that tends to produce an inflated projection of the gadget's real-world power consumption. Apple claims it tested iPhone's talk time with all of its default features turned on except the Wi-Fi network scanner.)


Most consumer electronics, including the iPhone, are powered by lithium-ion batteries. These power sources are popular because they pack many times the power of other types of batteries in a fraction of the space. Still, chemists can't do much to change the amount of electrical current created by the chemical reactions inside a lithium-ion battery. The only way to build a more powerful battery is to make it larger, thus creating space for extra chemicals.


Bonus Explainer: Since batteries aren't getting better and phones keep adding features, how are next-gen devices going to have enough juice? Tech analysts say new screen technology will offer a huge amount of power savings. A large touch screen like the one on the iPhone is particularly power-intensive. As a result, gadget manufacturers are increasingly ditching traditional LCD displays in favor of the more energy efficient organic light-emitting diode screens. OLED screens are more expensive to produce than their LCD counterparts, but they put out virtually the same amount of light as a conventional screen while using a fraction of the energy.

Low-Cost Laptops for Kids in Need

In a rural Cambodian village where the homes lack electricity, the nighttime darkness is pierced by the glow from laptops that children bring from school. The students were equipped with notebook computers from a foundation run by MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte and his wife Elaine.


"When the kids bring them home and open them up, it's the brightest light source in the home," said Negroponte. "Parents love it."


Negroponte and some MIT colleagues are hard at work on a project they hope will brighten the lives and prospects of hundreds of millions of developing world kids. It's a grand idea and a daunting challenge: to create rugged, internet- and multimedia-capable laptop computers at a cost of $100 apiece.


That's right, the price of dinner for four at a moderately priced Manhattan restaurant can buy a Third World kid what Negroponte considers an essential tool for making it in the 21st century. The laptops would be mass-produced in orders of no smaller than 1 million units and bought by governments, which would distribute them.


Ambitious projects to bridge the digital divide in the developing world at low cost have had a shaky track record. Perhaps the best example is the Simputer, a $220 handheld device developed by Indian scientists in 2001 that only last year became available and isn't selling well.


But Negroponte and MIT colleagues Joe Jacobson and Seymour Papert aren't deterred.


For one, three corporate partners have committed an initial $2 million apiece to the initiative and pledged to serve as suppliers for the "one laptop per child" project: Sunnyvale, California, Advanced Micro Devices, which will bring expertise in processors; "Do No Evil" search engine king Google; and News Corp., Rupert Murdoch's media company with global satellite capabilities.


The mission: to make laptops as ubiquitous as cell phones in technology-deprived regions. Negroponte's pitch: The cost of a laptop comes in far lower than a child's textbook expenses for the computer's lifespan.


"It's a way of having the children be the agents of change," Negroponte told The Associated Press. "They bring the device home, and then the parents look over their shoulder." He thinks it's extremely important that individual children own laptops; it will ensure they'll be well-maintained.


In design and function, Negroponte wants the $100 laptop to "be so close to the current laptops as to be nearly indistinguishable," but acknowledges that the machine will have a relatively slow processor and modest storage capacity paired with barebones software.


The biggest challenge, he says, is designing a display that doesn't put the price out of reach or drain the battery such as Apple A1175 Battery, Apple A1185 Battery, Apple M9324 Battery, Apple M8403 Battery, Apple M7318 Battery, apple PowerBook G3 Battery, Apple PowerBook G4 Battery, Apple PowerBook G4 15 inch Battery, Apple A1012 Battery, Apple M8511 Battery too quickly.


Details are still being worked out, but here's the MIT team's current recipe: Put the laptop on a software diet; use the freely distributed Linux operating system; design a battery capable of being recharged with a hand crank; and use newly developed "electronic ink" or a novel rear-projected image display with a 12-inch screen.


Then, give it Wi-Fi access, and add USB ports to hook up peripheral devices.


Most importantly, take profits, sales costs and marketing expenses out of the picture.


"The technology challenge is real, and you need to make some breakthroughs, but most of the money is saved in other ways," said Negroponte, who pitched the project in January at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the annual confab of global powerbrokers.


Negroponte has also met with Chinese and Brazilian officials to discuss expected orders and production in those countries, which would create local jobs. Two prototypes have been built, and test units could be shipped by the middle of next year. The project would essentially be nonprofit, with about $90 covering hardware for each computer and an extra $10 for contingencies or a small profit margin depending on how each government's order is structured.


Yet even if all those hurdles are surmounted, some question whether a $100 laptop project is the answer to bridging the global digital divide.


"Even if you give the laptops out for free, internet access and even electricity are huge problems," said Marc Einstein, an analyst with Pyramid Research, a Cambridge telecommunications consulting firm.


Negroponte and Co. have part of that solved, at least in theory: Out of the box, the $100 laptops will be able to communicate with one another using peer-to-peer mesh networking. That doesn't directly solve the internet or electricity problem, though.


Al Hammond, director for the nonprofit World Resources Institute's Digital Dividend project in Washington D.C., worries about customer support in poor, rural areas.


"The key is to create something affordable and sufficiently robust to protect against voltage surges, against dust, and against being dropped, and against all the perils of the internet," Hammond said. "Those things are more important if the nearest computer tech is three villages away and you don't have an air-conditioned office to work in."


Like Hammond, Andy Carvin, director of the Newton-based nonprofit Digital Divide Network, applauds the project's goals, calling an extremely low-cost, durable laptop "one of the holy grails of bridging the digital divide."


But he said increasingly sophisticated and versatile wireless handhelds may gain favor over laptops as the developing world's online tools of choice.


"That's not to suggest we should not have an inexpensive laptop," Carvin said. "They're parallel tracks, and it's probably a healthy competition to have both."


The digital divide remains vast: The technology research firm IDC examined 53 countries and determined that a household in Canada was 131 times more likely to own a personal computer than one in Indonesia -- hardly the world's least tech-oriented country.


The United States trailed Canada at No. 2 by that measure in rankings that examined computer use in countries that fall in the top third for advanced technology use.


Negroponte says his promotion of the $100 laptop project at the World Economic Forum meeting has helped it gain momentum.


"People are now calling me saying, 'We'd like to participate, and not only can we participate, but we can do it cheaper, or we can create better performance in this laptop,'" he said.


"People are saying, 'My God, this is real.'"
